Pediatric Dentistry

There are a lot of people who have not yet taken their kids to the dentist. Some because they just haven't had to, others because they haven't even thought about it, and some because they can't afford it. I have had to take my son in for a large amount of dental surgery and let me tell you it is worth it to go to the pediatric versus the regular adult offices. For one thing the pediatric offices are designed for children they are brightly coloured, have lots of toys, t.v.s and distractions.

For another thing the form of anesthetic they use is a lot more than just a numbing agent. They provide nitrous oxide as well as local anesthetic so your child is calm and has no chance of feeling any pain.

It is nerve racking the first time you go in because you don't know how your child is going to act. Will they be scared and grab things while the dentist is working? Will they not open their mouths? There are so many questions and you won't find the answer until your there. Surprisingly we only had a few minor speed bumps when we had our four major visits. The first is that your child may get loopy off the nitrous. Tyson was very silly and made quite a few odd noises. The second would be fear when they return for their second visit, but that is only if the first visit was major such as an extraction, if you only had something like a cleaning done for your first visit the fear factor would probably not apply. And the final problem is unpredictability. Your not going to be able to know if your child's jaw is going to snap shut on the dentists finger or if they are going to stick their tongue in the way as the dentist is drilling. But luckily the dentists are in the know with this line of work and it won't catch them off guard as much as it will you. You need to keep your cool and let the dentist do their job but at the same time try to control what you think you can without stepping on any toes. You find your groove and things will go smoothly.

So don't be afraid of taking your child for their first dental visit. If you can start a healthy routine with your dentist it will be the best decision you can make. And if funding for the dentist is a problem see what kind of programs are available to you, here in B.C. we have what's called the Healthy Kids Program which covers 60% of most dental work for kids under 12 years old. I am sure there are programs in every province/state and if not try and keep up with brushing.

If you are moving to a house that is not entirely ready, you have massive things to do. To make things smooth, create a list based on priorities.
