Essential Tools Every Household Should Own

Decades back, fixing something on your own was a thing of pride and craftiness. Nowadays, experts are called in for the most trivial of things. If you are old-school in this manner, or would like know your way around fixing stuff, you are going to need proper tools – not just a few days before a repair/DIY project, but permanently, in your toolshed. In my personal opinion and from my own experience, these are items everyone should always keep handy.
Safety Glasses
Almost every project, be it I DIY, or repairs has your eyes in its crosshairs. Cutting, nailing, polishing, all of these activities require protecting the most vulnerable part of your body. Sight impairment and infections are common threats, so my advice is: buy safety glasses, regardless of whether you are cutting wood, drilling holes or simply repainting!
Adjustable Wrench
Designed to fit a wide range of nuts and bolts, the adjustable wrench is a must-have. It is quite convenient and portable, which makes it useful in terms of not having to carry or store a full set of wrenches.
Pipe Wrench
No plumbing repairs can be done without a pipe wrench. It is powerful, heavy and equipped with “teeth”, in order to provide a tighter grip, which is especially convenient for plumbing. The only downside to this useful tool is its weight, but if you opt for an aluminum model, instead of one made of iron, you can have it lighter – it’s a good investment.

Socket Wrenches
Unlike the adjustable wrench and the pipe wrench, socket wrenches aren’t hugely common. This, however, is not to say that you shouldn’t getthese – they are used for properly tightening fasteners or loosening those that are frozen, which means that their use is quite versatile. The 1/4” drive is used for electronics and appliances, the 3/8” for automotive work and the 1/2” is used for basically any socket.
Combination Wrench
Combination wrench pretty much sums up the wrench part of this article. It is quite simple in terms of design – open-end on one side, box-end on the other. It comes as a part of a toolset with various sizes. Due to its simplicity in design, it is almost virtually impossible to break, which makes it an integral part of any toolshed. To wrap up the story about wrenches, all of the mentioned can be easily found in any store that specializes in tools in Sydney.
Sledgehammer
When it comes to the heavies with regards to tools, there is nothing more powerful than a good old sledgehammer, at least when it comes to basic equipment. The destructive power of this tool is so huge, it unmistakably brings satisfaction when used. Swinging it over head and bashing everything in sight isn’t the only use for this “instrument”; it can also serve as a putter to salvage architectural elements, for example. 8- to 10-pound models are the most convenient and popular, but these monstrosities also come in 16- and 20-pound options.
Putty Knife
This is actually a group of tools, consisting of thin-bladed, flexible knives and chisel-edge putty knives. We recommend the high-carbon steel blade.
Bow Saw
If you expect to be doing even the simplest type of wood-cutting, you won’t be able to get through it without a bow saw. It has a replaceable blade, which makes it a durable piece of equipment.
If you aren’t afraid to get your hands dirty, get a toolshed and then get the items off of this list. You can rest assured that the need to use each piece of the mentioned equipment will pop up at a certain point. Besides, there is nothing better than the feeling of accomplishment after getting the job done with your bare hands… okay, with your bare hands and their little helpers.

Have a Scary, but Safe, Halloween!

Safety tips that won’t rob the night of its fun

Ghosts and goblins, little witches and skeletons — and more than likely the latest Disney princesses and comic book characters — will be roaming the streets come Halloween.

A scary as the subtext of Halloween may be, it’s not meant to be dangerous day. While adult costume parties are increasingly popular, it is still a day meant for the kids, and you want to do all that you can to keep it safe for them without taking the spirit of the day away.

“Halloween is such a fun time of year, with the costumes, parties and scary décor,” says Namita Gupta, Senior Marketing Manager for Rayovac at Spectrum Brands. “You don’t want to dampen that fun with an accident or emergency that could have been avoided by taking the right precautions.”

Namita offers the following tips to keep your Halloween safe without taking away any of the fun:

·       Drive carefully. Ideally, you won’t have to get in your vehicle on Halloween. But if you do, remember there will be scores of excited youngsters roaming the streets, and they could be darting out into the road unexpectedly. Please pay attention.

·       Keep an eye on those kids. Kids can be quick and crafty. To keep them from running out into the road unattended, sampling some candy you haven’t inspected or entering a stranger’s house, don’t divert your attention from their Halloween frivolity.

·       Illuminate from within. The Jack O’Lantern is a time-honoured Halloween tradition. Carve a scary face into the side of pumpkin, put in a candle and voila! a creepy glowing scary face out front of your house. But anytime you are using a live flame, like a candle, there is a risk of fire. Mitigate that risk by using small battery-powered lights to give your Jack its spooky aura.

·       Light the way. No question, Halloween is best enjoyed after dark. But it can be treacherous walking to streets with limited visibility after the sun goes down. Best to carry a small flashlight with you to ensure no tripping hazards are in your path.

·       Charge up. Taking the kids out trick or treating is the Halloween mainstay, the kids decked out in their costumes going door-to-door for some free candy. No doubt you will want to snap some pictures on your mobile phone, coordinate with the parents of your children’s friends, or — worst case — maybe even need your phone in the event of an emergency. It’s not a time you want to be running out of juice. Bring along a portable charger to ensure your phone is ready when you are.

·       Enjoy cautiously. For the kids, it’s all about the candy. Mini chocolate bars, bags of chips, rockets, molasses kisses … by the end of the night their treat bags are a veritable cornucopia of junk food. Parents should closely inspect all of the candy the kids bring home on Halloween, looking closely for any evidence it may have been tampered with. It is also a wise idea to monitor how much they are eating to ensure it stays in balance with a relatively healthy diet.

Trouble or Typical Male Teenage Angst? 5 ways to know for sure

It's tempting to ignore various warning signs, preferring to think your boy is just going through a phase, but is that the case? Is your son in trouble, or is it just typical teenage angst?

For over 20 years Clayton Lessor has helped countless troubled teens make the transition from boyhood to adult life. He is the founder of The Quest Project, a program designed to help boys transition from boyhood to manhood, and author of the news book, Saving Our Sons: A Parent's Guide to Preparing Boys for Success.

“Boys have a really hard time growing up these days,” he said. “Young men facing crisis without help can fall far behind their female counterparts in school and in life. They are failing to learn the lessons they need to survive and thrive in the adult world.”

Lessor’s book contains time tested battle hardened strategies and tactics for helping parents aid in the transition from boyhood to manhood.

Here are five key warning signs that indicate a teenage boy is in trouble and what to do about it.

Warning Sign #1: Father gone

Solution: Get him a mentor. Whether his dad is physically or emotionally unavailable, your son needs a male mentor. Make sure it's some you both trust -- an uncle, a family friend, a neighbor, a teacher, or a coach.

Warning Sign #2: Depressed or scared

Solution: Get him in counseling. Many boys simply don't know how to deal with the pain that comes with adolescence and often turn to drugs and alcohol for relief. He may think he's just partying or rebelling against your rules, but substance abuse numbs pain, and numbing pain does not make it go away. Get him help.

Warning Sign #3: Loner or in bad company

Solution: Enroll him in a support group. The more your son is regularly exposed to healthy and mature men the better access he will have to quality support. Get involved in various organizations, church groups, meet ups, neighborhood gatherings, etc. Find ways for him to interact with more people and find the support he needs.

Warning Sign #4: Doesn't feel worthy or appreciated. States that you don't understand how hard or what he is going through

Solution: He needs a ritual or celebration to make his transformation. This can be as simple as a conversation. "I know this is the beginning of a change for you, and that you're no longer a little boy, and I want you to know that I can identify it and I can see it." Even if he rolls his eyes at you (which he very well might), what matters is that he knows you validate what he's going through.

Warning Sign #5: Lack of direction

Solution: He needs a sense of achievement, importance and change. Feed him what he loves, wind him up, set him free, and watch him soar. If he falls down, pick him up, wash off the scrapes, and start over. Focus on what he does right, not what he's doing wrong. When you catch him meeting and exceeding your expectations, let him know you notice. That builds a healthy foundation for continued achievement.

Baby Gourmet

Your baby is ready for a protein-packed taste adventure, and the FDA is on board, recommending that a six-month to one-year-old needs about 13 to 15 grams of protein a day, according to their Recommended Daily Intake (RDI). Luckily, pureed fruit, vegetable, meat, and whole grain combos are having a moment with babies of all ages, helping them to grow strong, and healthy, especially while weaning to table food.

Modeled after meals you would have yourself, Baby Gourmet's organic, low acid, high protein meals  were created with adventurous eaters in mind.  Staring at 6 months with flavors including Sweet Potato, Apple and Chicken, and progressing into months 7 and 8 with Veggie Beef Bolognese and Pasta Stars, Baby Gourmet's nutritious pouches designed to satisfy baby’s taste buds while prioritizing nutritional needs.

About Baby Gourmet

100% goodness

highest quality organic ingredients
Babies are our most precious gifts and we believe in nourishing them with the purest, most natural foods available. That’s why we use only the very best, non-GMO organic ingredients – no fillers, added sugar or salt, or artificial preservatives of any kind.

With each choice we make – from choosing an ingredient to tasting our final product – we are passionately dedicated to creating the highest quality baby and toddler food on the market. This is our priority and we will never compromise.

our story began at home

I remember when my daughter, Finley, was six months old. I went to the grocery store and bought a couple jars of baby food. After opening a jar of strained green beans, I knew instantly I wasn’t going to feed her anything I wouldn’t eat myself. I definitely wasn’t going to eat that jar of green beans! From that day forward, I committed myself to making my own baby meals from scratch. I created delicious recipes we both loved!
My sister, Jill, and I grew up with wholesome, flavourful food. Baby Gourmet was born because we wanted the best for our kids. We know your babies will love our great tasting, organic baby food as much as ours did.
Enjoy,

4 Ways Your Cellphone Might Be Making You Ugly

Our cellphones have become so vital to our daily lives. Research has shown that the average person checks their phone 85 times a day and that we spend a total of five hours using our cellphones to browse the web or use apps. For many, our smartphone is the first thing we look at in the morning and the last thing we check at bedtime. Although quick glances at our phone may seem harmless, it can in fact be affecting us physically, mentally and emotionally. We caught up with some experts who help explain the ugly side of excessive cellphones use.

1. Ugly posture.
When we look down at our cellphones we are straining our necks and slouching our shoulders. Doing this can cause some serious damage to our overall posture even leading us to lose up to an inch to an inch and a half of height. “I see up to 10 patients a week complaining of severe neck and shoulder pain. When asked how often they use their phones the typical response is all the time. When pain becomes chronic and severe, surgery has to be considered,” explains Dr. Richard Samperisi, CoFounder of Campus Chiropractic Center at Florida International University & Functional Medicine Practitioner.

2. Ugly eye strain, bags and wrinkles.
Not only can staring at your phone all day cause serious neck and shoulder pain, the extreme use of our phones is leading to various eye conditions such as blurred vision, eye strain, headaches and dry eyes as well as to a condition they like to call “tech neck.” For those concerned with cosmetics and eye appearance constant squinting leads to wrinkles and under eye bags. New Bern, North Carolina plastic surgeon Dr. John Zannis explains that a combination of surgical and non-surgical procedures that address under eye bags, drooping and sagging usually range from 5 - $10,000 with a recovery time of up to 2 weeks. He’s also seen a rise in complaints about neck lines and wrinkling skin attributed to excessive cell phone use.

3. Ugly skin.
Are you constantly struggling with breakouts around your cheeks or chin? Instead of blaming hormones, junk food or a bad skincare routine consider looking at the device in your hand. “Our cellphones are filled with bacteria. We are continuously touching them with dirty hands, throwing them in our bags, stuffing them in our pockets or putting them on counter tops. Then without even thinking twice we put our phones right up to our ears where all of that bacterium from those dirty areas wreak havoc on our face,” offers Board Certified Dermatologist Dr. Kaly Papantoniou.  She suggests frequently wiping the phone screen and using a face wash with benzoyl peroxide or salicylic acid to rid bacteria from building up.

4. Ugly Manners
We see people at restaurants who are more focused on snapping a pic of their meal than enjoying each other’s company. Our persistent use of our cellphones can be affecting our relationships with the people and world around us. “When we focus more on our digital lives rather than the individuals we are with; we are not only giving off the impression that we do not care about what they have to say, we are also letting valuable and meaningful moments pass us by,” explains Dr. Sanam Hafeez a New York City based neuropsychologist and teaching faculty at Columbia University. She suggests putting the phone down and even going cell free twice a week.

Give it a try and see how cutting down on your phone use can also cut down on the ugly.

Finding the Money: Paying for Your Home Improvements

Making improvements to your home is an excellent way to improve its value. You can ensure that it stays looking great, as well as updating it to keep it modern. However, it's not always a cheap thing to do. Sometimes you might make small changes here and there, which are easy to pay for. However, occasionally you may want to take on a bigger project that will cost you more. Paying for more extensive work to your home isn't as easy as dipping into your savings. There's more work involved in making sure you can meet the costs and complete the work you want. Consider the costs of your next project with these steps.

Creating a Budget

First, you need to create a budget for your home improvements. Planning out how much it will cost helps you to accurately get hold of the finances. You need to start by creating a plan for what you want to do. Consider all the tasks that will need to be completed, from plastering to electrics. Once you know what needs to be done, you can think about the contractors you need to hire and materials you need to buy. After that, you can start comparing prices. Look at different price points and what you'll get for what you can afford.

Savings vs. Borrowing

As a general rule, it's always best to pay for home improvements with your savings. If you have the money to do it, there's no need to borrow anything. Using a loan or credit cards could add to your costs and make your project more expensive. However, borrowing can also be a legitimate option. Your project may need to be completed as soon as possible. If you don't have time to save, you'll need to borrow some money. There's nothing wrong with taking on some debt if you can pay it back. In fact, it can help to keep your credit score healthy.

Choosing the Right Type of Finance

There are several types of financing you should consider for your home improvements. It's important to look at each option you have to find the best one. You could get a better deal with some types of finance than with others. For example, you can look at online secured loans. You can borrow money against your home and start the application without having to go to a bank. However, you also have credit cards, as well as unsecured loans to consider.

Working Out the Full Cost of Borrowing

If you're going to borrow money for your home improvements, you need to know that you can afford it. To make sure you can, you should work out the full cost of borrowing. You have to consider the interest, as well as any fees you might have to pay. There could be initial costs, as well as monthly costs when you begin to pay the money back.

Consider the costs of your home improvements carefully before you start them. Sticking to a budget is essential.

How to Save Money While Caring for Your Kids AND Your Aging Parents

With more millennials living at home and seniors living well past retirement, the people providing financial care for both populations are being spread pretty thin. For families who care for the young and old, there are some great ways to cut back on spending that won’t feel like too much of a sacrifice.

Save Money Without Feeling the Pinch With These Tips

The small investments you make for your family add up — especially if they’re all being deducted at the same time. From preschool and college tuition to healthcare for your parents, you may see more red at the end of the month than you’d like. Money doesn’t grow on trees, but small choices can mean big savings. Try these ideas on for size.

Shop Secondhand

When you go thrift shopping, you can be environmentally conscience while saving scratch. The creation of clothing takes a lot of energy, both human and industrial. Most of the clothing on the market today isn’t sustainable or environmentally sound. When you purchase items secondhand, you save the world one level of industrial pollution.

But secondhand shopping is good for your pocketbook, too. Kids grow out of clothes — fast. Find brand-name clothes at reduced prices when you thrift-shop or hit consignment stores. For furniture items or household goods, check out Habitat for Humanity’s ReStores. You can get a good deal there while helping your community.

Shop in Bulk and Clip Coupons

You don’t have to buy massive amounts of everything available at Sam’s Club or Costco, but certain items are cheaper when you buy in large quantities, especially when there’s a lot of people at home. Toilet paper, paper towels and coffee are perfect things to purchase in bulk.

Keep an eye out for coupons, too. You can clip the old-fashioned way and wait for a mailer, but it’s more efficient to search the web for what you want. Many grocery stores now have coupon codes they enter. Ask your grocery cashier if the store uses this code and, if so, if they’ll run it for you. When you’re purchasing for your elderly parents, ask for senior discounts, and when you’ve got kids in tow, look for student discounts. Both are there to benefit people on limited budgets.

Cut Back and Consume Less

First, consider living arrangements. It may make more sense to have your college kid live at home if your elderly parent needs additional care. Don’t feel like what you have today is your only option. Think of everyone’s space as a piece of a puzzle, and try to arrange it in such a way that it benefits the most people. If it means helping the budget, it will likely be helpful to everyone.

Once you’ve arranged living spaces, work to consume less as a family. It’s easier to not eat the cookie than to run off the calories later. The same is true about spending. Getting rid of your cable, for instance, can mean more time spent with your family and a big savings. A game that you can play with young and old is a great substitute, and it’s a lot cheaper.

Use Technology

Find how big-box stores are using technology to gain customers and use it to your advantage. Target offers a debit/credit card that gives you 5% off your purchase. Walmart has a Savings Catcher that compares prices on your receipt to deals at other local shops, then reimburses the difference.

Some stores will offer online-only promotions. If you’re need of a big-ticket item, check for it in the brick-and-mortar store, and then look online to see if there are any promotions for it at other locations.

Check Your Statements

Statements are a world of info. Always look for mistakes — human error can still affect your bank account or electricity bill. Next, look at how much you pay for, versus how much you actually use. Do you need all the data that’s in your plan? Or will the next one down cover your needs? If you aren’t ready to lose cable, consider whether you need the package you have, or if you can downsize it.

It may seem like small choices, but these numbers add up fast.

Care for All Those You Love — And Look for Savings

Whether your children live at home, in a dorm or you’re supporting them across the map, encourage them to live frugally. They can find healthy choices on a ramen budget. For instance, look for co-operatives that sell yesterday’s fruit at a discount. For aging parents who live with your or in a personal care home, spend time making a plan for daily expenses and long-term care.

Small choices today can make a big difference tomorrow.
