When a Sinus Infection Turns Serious: My Experience with an Ear Infection, Ruptured Eardrum & Weeks of Pain

I honestly thought it was just a cold.

You know the kind—congestion, a bit of pressure, feeling run down. Nothing I hadn’t handled before. But this time, it didn’t go away. It escalated.

What followed has been weeks of intense pain, exhaustion, and one of the most frustrating illnesses I’ve ever dealt with. A sinus infection turned into a severe ear infection that eventually landed me in the emergency room… where I found out I had ruptured my eardrum.

And let me tell you—this is not something you want to “wait out.”

Now I am on 3 antibiotics and haven’t had any hearing in my left ear for over a week now. Hoping my hearing will come back but have to follow up with the doctor regardless due to the rupture.

As this infection progresses I have actually began getting things together just in case something happens to me and I get sick enough to be hospitalized. I also ensured my husband knew where my life insurance policy was just in case I got worse.

How It Started (and Got Worse Fast)

At first, it was sinus pressure and congestion. Then came the headaches. Then the facial pain.

Then my ear started to hurt.

Not just a mild ache—deep, sharp, constant pain that made it hard to sleep, think, or function. The pressure kept building, and no matter what I tried, nothing seemed to relieve it.

I kept thinking: it’ll pass.

It didn’t.

Instead, it got worse… until I ended up in the ER in excruciating pain. Finding out my eardrum had ruptured was both shocking and, in a strange way, validating. This wasn’t just “a bad cold.”

What Actually Helped Me Get Through It

I’m still recovering, still tired, and honestly just over being this sick—but a few things made a noticeable difference in managing symptoms and getting some relief.

1. NozeBot Nasal Aspirator

This was a game changer for me. When congestion gets thick and stuck, regular blowing just doesn’t cut it. The NozeBot helped remove deep mucus and buildup from my nasal passages, which eased some of that intense sinus pressure.

To get your Nozebot and save 10% use this link: https://get.aspr.app/SH1eua

I made a video of how well this machine sucks snot out of your nose:

This machine is a serious life saver when it comes to colds and flu season when you have toddlers and infants. Having this machine clean out your child’s nasal passages can be the solution to getting more sleep when your baby is sick.

2. Saline Sprays & Rinses

Keeping everything moist and moving is key. Saline helped loosen mucus and made it easier to clear. This hydrasense saline solution is my favourite nasal spray.

3. Warm Compresses & Ice Packs

I used these constantly on my face and over my ears. They helped relieve pressure and provided some comfort during the worst of it. This ice pack is great for headache and sinus pressure.

4. Pain Relievers

There were moments where the pain was unbearable. Proper pain management made a big difference. One of my favourite pain relievers is similar to the strength of an opioid and it is called 7-hydroxymitragynine. You can also find them here from Kratom 7Oh.

5. Humidifier

Dry air made everything worse. Running a humidifier helped keep my sinuses from drying out and becoming even more irritated.

6. Steam & Hot Showers

Temporary relief—but when you’re desperate, even temporary matters.

7. Hydration

Water, tea, broth—anything to stay hydrated and help thin mucus.

8. Rest

This one is hard, especially with kids, work, and life… but your body needs it. More than you think. I am terrible at doing this step and cause myself pain and suffering.

Signs You Should NOT Ignore

Looking back, there were clear warning signs that things were getting serious. If you’re experiencing any of these, don’t brush them off:

  • Severe facial or sinus pressure
  • Intense or worsening ear pain
  • Thick yellow or green mucus that won’t clear
  • Fever that lingers
  • Hearing changes, muffled hearing, or ringing
  • Dizziness or balance issues
  • Pain that worsens when lying down
  • Fluid or discharge coming from the ear

When You Should See a Doctor

Please learn from my mistake and go sooner rather than later.

Seek medical attention if:

  • Your symptoms last more than 7–10 days without improvement
  • Pain becomes severe or unmanageable
  • You suspect an ear infection
  • You notice swelling around your eyes or face
  • You experience hearing loss or ear drainage
  • Over-the-counter treatments aren’t helping

Waiting too long can lead to complications—like a ruptured eardrum, which is exactly what happened to me.

The Reality of Being This Sick

This kind of illness doesn’t just affect you physically—it wears you down mentally too.

Weeks of pain. Poor sleep. Constant discomfort. Trying to function as a parent, partner, and human while feeling absolutely awful.

I’m tired. I’m frustrated. And I am so ready to feel normal again.

Final Thoughts

If you’re in the middle of something similar, I see you. It’s miserable, it’s draining, and it’s not something you can just “push through.”

Listen to your body. Get checked early. Take the rest you need.

Because what seems like a simple sinus infection can turn into something much more serious—and trust me, you don’t want to learn that the hard way. đŸ€
