5 Things you should know about maintaining your mattress

A mattress is a primary part of your daily life and you can’t do without it. A good night of sleep is dependent upon the state of your mattress and how well you maintain it determines its lifespan. It is important therefore that you maintain it to the best of your ability.

Here are 5 things you should know about maintaining your mattress:

1.    Mattress Support Is Important

You need to have the right kind of mattress support in place to prevent it from wearing off too fast. Spring mattresses need a box spring bed base for support while memory foam and specialty mattresses need a solid firm support. If you use a bed that is fitted with frames, ensure that it is designed in such a way that it can support both your weight and that of the mattress.

If you use a queen or king size bed, ensure that it has support bars to properly support the mattress.

2.    Keep Your Bed Linen Clean

As you sleep, you tend to shed sweat, hair, oils, and skin cells on your bed sheets and mattress cover. You may also be in the habit of eating in bed and you end up pouring crumbs on the mattress. All these things can penetrate into the mattress layers which results in bacteria and dust mites breeding in your mattress.

As such, it is important that you keep your bed linen clean by washing it every so often. Ensure that your bed sheets and blankets are changed and cleaned once every two weeks to maintain a healthy environment for the mattress, keeping it free from bacteria.

3.    Cover Your Mattress Using A Mattress Protector

You can accidentally spill fluids on the mattress which would leave some ugly stains. Dust also tends to accumulate on the mattress which would potentially attract dust mites. Using a quality mattress protector is essential in protecting your mattress and maintaining it in good condition.

A mattress cover will protect your mattress from damage, prevent it from absorbing sweat and skin oils that you shed while sleeping and minimize the accumulation of allergens such as dust mites and mold.

4.    Handle The Mattress With Care When Moving It

When moving your mattress from one point to another, avoid folding or bending it. Keep the mattress sideways in an upright position to prevent creasing or sagging. It is also advisable that you encase it in plastic before you start moving it.

Using a heavy duty mattress bag is quite beneficial as it protects the mattress from dirt and water as well as preventing scuffs and scratches. Avoid dragging the mattress on the floor using the mattress cover handles as this will damage its fabric.

5.    Clean Your Mattress Regularly

Your mattress should be cleaned every so often in order to keep it in a good condition. The most common cleaning method is vacuuming the mattress using a hose attachment in order to remove the dust on the surface.

Vacuuming can be done once within a three-month range. Stains can be washed off using a soap solution and mild water. Memory foam on the mattress is created using tempurpedic which is harder to clean off spills. Cleaning using harsh chemical cleaners can destroy the mattress foam.

It is advisable that you get a professional mattress cleaner to do the job for you. Sunrise Chem-Dry Company offers the best tempurpedic mattress cleaning services. Try them today.

DIY Table Revamp - Guest Post

Hi all! I'm Tiffany from This Motherhood is Brought to You by Xanax and I am so excited to be a part of the Guest Post Swap and to be Amanda's swap partner! I love love love her idea on how to make indoor snowballs with egg cartons. I am definitely going to have to try that with my kiddos since my smallest one has decided that it has to snow for Christmas. Poor baby doesn't know snow is hard to come by in Alabama :( For my guest post I wanted to share a little DIY with you guys that involves duct tape! A few months ago my daughter's little chair that goes with her table she sits at every day tore and she made it worse by pulling all of the stuffing out of the seat! What started out as a quick fix turned into a great idea. She loved her seat so much that she has now decided that her table has look cool too so being the smarty pants that she is, she tore her table!
