Savvy Ways To Save Money On Home Decor

Stop spending a fortune on home decor, and follow our savvy saving tips instead.

Stop wasting money on items you don't love

Have you ever fallen in love with a decor item in the shop or online, only to discover it doesn't work or fit in the space you had in mind for it?  Well, you're not alone, and sadly, many people waste a great deal of money holding onto such items every year.

Happily, there are decor vendors that understand this problem and sell items such as rugs with a try-before-you-buy offer. What this means is you can choose a rug online or in store, have it delivered to your home and try it properly before making the final decision on whether to buy it.  In this way, you can completely avoid being stuck with expensive rugs that you no longer want.

Use paint sparingly

Now you may think that painting your home will be cheaper than wallpaper, and while this can be the case, it's worth knowing that some paints, particularly speciality ones, cost a pretty penny.  With that in mind, it's best to use more expensive paints sparingly and combine them within your room with other cheaper options, such as basic magnolia.

One way you can do this is to paint specific features of the room, like skirting boards, doors and picture rails, in the more expensive paint.  Then paint the rest of the room in the cheaper option.  In this way, you can still achieve the look and feel you're going for without breaking the bank.

Embrace eclecticism

Taking an eclectic approach to home decor is another way you can save a significant amount of money.  Being a collective means combining different items from different styles and periods altogether in your Living Space.  In fact, it's a very popular approach,  and was made particularly famous by Monica Geller's iconic apartment in the 90s sitcom Friends.

To embrace eclecticism effectively, you will need to follow a few rules.  The first is to use a combination of older vintage pieces with newer ones.  The next step is to carefully consider the colors of the items you choose for your space.  Bold colours are absolutely encouraged, but they need to be balanced against a relatively neutral base such as cream, white, grey, or even black. Last of all, it can be very helpful when decorating a single core Style that is the Foundation of your look.  That's not to say that you can only use pieces from this style,  but by making sure the majority of pieces are cohesive you will get a much more pleasing effect.

Try faux flowers

If you pick up any home Interiors magazine, you will find that flowers are a massive part of decor.  The problem is that flowers are living things that require care and maintenance,  yet no matter how well you look after them, they eventually die, and they'll need to be replaced at a cost to you.  That's why it can be incredibly cost-effective to use faux or fake flowers in your home decor.

First of all, faux flowers are of a much higher standard than they used to be and can be almost undetectable from the real thing.  Secondly, there is a wide range of different types of Blooms and plants available.  This means no matter what look you are going for, you will find something that meets your style needs.  The next fake flowers are great because they do not need care or replacement; in fact, you pay out once for them and then enjoy them for as long as you like. Although you may need to give them the occasional dust to keep them looking their best.

Make curtains for your kitchen

In a lot of home decor blogs, you will find advice about how to paint your kitchen cabinets.  This is a popular way of giving your kitchen a look without having to replace the entire thing.  While painting your cabinets can be a cheaper option,  getting the professional finish that most people expect can be something of a challenge.  Not to mention that the paint you need to use can be pretty expensive, too.

That is why, instead of painting your kitchen cabinets, you should consider removing the doors and adding curtains instead.  The great thing about kitchen cabinet curtains is that they immediately give you that country farmhouse look that is so popular right now.  Additionally, you can choose any fabric or pattern you like, even scraps you already have, which gives you a custom finish for your kitchen.  You can even learn how to make these curtains yourself and so save a fortune compared to painting or replacing the doors.
