DIY Witchy Potion Shelf: Turning Creativity Into Magic

This adorable witchy potion shelf started as nothing more than an idea—and a strong urge to create something spooky, beautiful, and completely mine. This year, I’ve decided to fully lean into my creative side, not only as a way to relieve stress, but also to make bank doing what I love. ✨

Step 1: Creating the Shelf With Hand-Poured Concrete

The base of the potion shelf is made using hand-poured concrete. I pour the concrete into a custom mold shaped like a potion bottle with a skull detail at the top. Once cured, the piece is removed and allowed to fully harden. Concrete gives the shelf a solid, weighty feel and adds to that old-world, apothecary aesthetic that makes witchy décor so irresistible.

After curing, I lightly sand the surface to smooth any rough edges while keeping enough texture for a slightly aged, mysterious look.

Step 2: Painting for Depth and Drama

Once the concrete is fully cured and prepped, I paint the entire piece. The exterior is finished in a dark, moody tone to give it that gothic, spellbook-worthy vibe. Inside the shelves, I use bold, magical colors—like deep purples—to create contrast and draw the eye to the tiny treasures inside.

Layering paint and allowing each coat to dry fully helps build depth and makes the shelf feel intentional and polished.

Step 3: Adding Stickers and Visual Magic

To bring the potion shelf to life, I add carefully chosen stickers inside the shelves. Skulls, potion bottles, florals, and occult-inspired designs instantly set the tone and create a backdrop that feels like it came straight out of a witch’s apothecary.

List of items I bought from Amazon for this project:

Stickers

Skulls

Crystals

Glue

Chameleon Paint

Potion Bottles

These little details add personality and make each shelf feel unique.

Step 4: Styling With Tiny Treasures

This is where the real fun begins. I decorate each shelf with miniature skulls, tiny potion bottles, and faux crystals. I also include beautiful broken rocks I’ve found while rockhounding—each one naturally unique, imperfect, and full of character.

Mixing found natural elements with curated miniatures creates balance and gives the shelf a story. No two pieces ever turn out the same, and that’s part of the magic.

Step 5: Sealing It All for Display

Once everything is perfectly placed, I seal the entire piece. Sealing protects the paint, stickers, and decorative elements, ensuring the potion shelf is durable and ready for display. It also gives the shelf a finished look while locking in all those tiny, spooky details.

Creativity as Therapy—and a Business

Making these witchy potion shelves has become more than just a craft—it’s therapy. The process slows my mind, lets me focus on beauty, and reminds me how powerful creativity can be. This year, I’m choosing to honour that creativity, turn it into income, and build something meaningful from my own hands.

I have been making concrete for almost 10 years now and have turned it into a very successful side hustle.

Spooky, adorable, handmade magic—created with intention, passion, and a little bit of witchcraft. 🖤✨
