There is something so satisfying about creating beautiful seasonal décor without spending a dime. This year, instead of buying another Easter porch sign, I made my own using old bunk bed planks, leftover paint, and Easter decorations from last year. No screws. No tools. No power saw. Just glue, fabric, paint, and a little creativity.
If you love decorating on a budget like I do, this project is for you.
What I Used (All Things I Already Had)
- Old wooden bunk bed planks
- Leftover paint (white and soft pastel shades)
- Paintbrushes
- Fabric scraps (an old cotton sheet works perfectly)
- Strong craft glue or wood glue
- Easter decorations from last year (flowers, eggs, ribbon, little bunny décor pieces)
- Sandpaper (optional, but helpful if you have it)
That’s it. No hardware. No drill. No screws. No stress.
Step-by-Step: How I Made It
Step 1: Clean and Prep the Wood
The bunk bed planks had been sitting in storage, so I wiped them down with a damp cloth to remove dust and debris.
If your boards are rough, lightly sanding them helps paint stick better — but this is optional. I kept mine slightly rustic because I love that farmhouse look.
Step 2: Arrange the Boards
I laid the planks vertically on the floor to create a tall porch sign shape. You can make yours as tall or short as you like depending on your space.
Mine ended up about porch-height — perfect for leaning beside the front door.
Step 3: Connect the Boards (No Screws Needed!)
This is the fun part — and the trick that makes it work without tools.
- Flip the boards over so the backs are facing up.
- Cut strips of sturdy fabric long enough to run across the boards horizontally.
- Apply a generous line of strong glue across each board.
- Lay the fabric strips across the glued areas, pressing firmly.
I used a large sheet of fabric that fit the boards perfectly from top to bottom and a generous amount of wood glue.
Once dry, the fabric acts like a hinge system, holding everything together while still allowing slight flexibility. It’s surprisingly sturdy when glued well and fully dried.
Let it dry completely before flipping it over.
Step 4: Paint the Base
I painted the entire front white as a base coat. Two light coats work best.
Once dry, I lightly sanded the edges to give it that soft, distressed farmhouse feel. Totally optional — but I love the worn look.
Step 5: Add Your Easter Design
Here’s where you can get creative.
I used an old dollar store sign for the “Happy Easter” portion.
And used clearance decor I picked up last year from Walmart and superstore in soft pastel shades.
If lettering isn’t your thing, or you don’t have time to paint a huge design you could:
- Paint a bunny silhouette
- Add pastel stripes
- Do polka dots
- Create a carrot design
Simple is beautiful.
Step 6: Decorate with What You Already Have
Now the magic.
I grabbed leftover Easter décor from last year:
- Faux florals
- Decorative eggs
- Ribbon
- A small bunny ornament
Using glue, I added a bunch of little bunnies, some cute wooden pieces, and kept it simple. Layering textures makes it look store-bought — but it cost nothing.
Less is more. You want it charming, not cluttered.
My Favourite Décor Additions
If I had to choose my favourite finishing touches, it would be:
- Soft pastel florals tucked into one corner
- A burlap-style bow for texture
- Speckled decorative eggs
- A simple twine wrap detail
Mixing rustic wood with soft Easter pastels creates that cozy, welcoming porch look. I might add more pieces as I get closer to the holiday but it looks great the way it is.
Why I Love Projects Like This
With everything costing more these days, it feels good to:
- Reuse what we already have
- Keep materials out of the landfill
- Decorate beautifully without overspending
- Create something completely unique
There’s also something special about looking at your porch and knowing you made that.
No tools.
No extra trips to the store.
No extra spending.
Just creativity and a little glue. Using all the little baskets of random decorations I have for stuff like this gives it a better purpose and looks like I spent a decent amount on it.
Final Thoughts
If you have scrap wood sitting around — old bed frames, fence boards, leftover renovation pieces — you have the start of something beautiful.
Add paint. Add fabric. Add last year’s decorations.
And just like that, you’ve created a custom Easter porch sign for next to nothing.
If you try this, I’d love to know what you put on yours — classic “Happy Easter” or something totally different?
Sometimes the best décor doesn’t come from a store. It comes from what we already have.
