Why Duplo Blocks Are One of Our Favourite Daycare Toys

When it comes to daycare favourites, Duplo blocks are always at the top of our list—and for good reason. These larger, easy-to-handle building blocks are perfectly designed for tiny hands, making them an ideal introduction to creative play. At our daycare, they’re not just toys—they’re tools for learning, imagination, and endless fun.

Built for Little Hands (and Big Imaginations)

Unlike smaller building blocks, Duplo pieces are chunky, safe, and easy for toddlers and preschoolers to grip, stack, and pull apart. This means less frustration and more confidence as kids build independently. Whether they’re stacking towers, creating animals, or building entire “cities,” their imaginations truly run wild.

I wrote a great piece on my daycare website about different games and activities you can play with Duplo Blocks!

And the best part? There’s no “right way” to play. Every creation is unique—and that’s where the magic happens.

Learning Through Play

Duplo blocks aren’t just fun—they’re incredibly educational. Here are a few ways we use them to build early skills:

🎨 Colour Recognition Games

1. Colour Sorting Challenge

Dump out a pile of blocks and ask children to sort them into groups by colour.

Make it fun: Use bowls or draw coloured circles on paper as “parking spots.”

2. Find & Build

Call out a colour and have kids find blocks of that colour to build something (a tower, a bridge, etc.).

🔢 Counting & Math Games

1. Stack & Count Towers

Ask kids to build a tower with a specific number of blocks.

Example: “Can you build a tower with 5 blocks?”

2. Who Has More?

Have two children build towers, then count together to see which is taller and by how many blocks.

3. Pattern Play

Create simple patterns (red-blue-red-blue) and have kids copy or continue them.

🏗️ Early Architecture & STEM Play

1. Bridge Building Challenge

Encourage kids to build a bridge that can hold a toy car. Test different designs and talk about what works best.

2. Tallest Tower Contest

Who can build the tallest tower without it falling? This introduces balance and structure.

3. Copy the Design

Build a simple structure and have kids try to recreate it—great for spatial awareness and problem-solving.

Simple Duplo “Blueprints” & How-To Builds

Here are a few easy builds you can guide kids through:

🏠 Simple House

What you need:

  • 8–10 blocks (any colour)
  • 1 flat base piece (optional)

Steps:

  1. Start with a square base (2x2 or 2x3 blocks).
  2. Stack blocks upward to create walls (2–3 layers high).
  3. Leave a small gap for a “door.”
  4. Add a flat piece or blocks across the top as a roof.

Learning bonus: Talk about doors, roofs, and what makes a house!

🚗 Basic Car

What you need:

  • 4 rectangular blocks
  • 2–4 wheel pieces (if available)

Steps:

  1. Stack 2 blocks as the base.
  2. Add another layer on top for height.
  3. Attach wheels on the bottom (or pretend if none available).
  4. Add a small block on top as a “driver seat.”

Learning bonus: Count wheels, talk about movement!

🌉 Mini Bridge

What you need:

  • 6–8 blocks

Steps:

  1. Build two small towers (2–3 blocks high) a short distance apart.
  2. Lay a longer block across the top to connect them.
  3. Test it by driving a toy under or over it!

Learning bonus: Introduces basic engineering concepts like support and balance.

🌳 Simple Tree

What you need:

  • Brown blocks (trunk)
  • Green blocks (leaves)

Steps:

  1. Stack 2–3 brown blocks vertically.
  2. Add green blocks on top, spreading them out like branches.
  3. Get creative—no two trees need to look the same!

Learning bonus: Talk about nature and seasons.

Why We Keep Coming Back to Duplo

Duplo blocks are one of those rare toys that grow with your child. From simple stacking to imaginative storytelling and early STEM skills, they offer endless opportunities to learn through play.

At daycare, we see it every day—kids collaborating, problem-solving, counting, laughing, and proudly showing off their creations. It’s more than just building… it’s building confidence, creativity, and connection.

✨ Tip: Rotate Duplo pieces or introduce themed challenges (farm, city, zoo) to keep play fresh and exciting! I love this African animal set!

If you’re looking for a toy that checks all the boxes—fun, educational, durable, and endlessly engaging—Duplo blocks are truly a must-have.
