As a daycare provider and mom, I know firsthand how challenging it can be to teach young children proper handwashing habits. Kids are busy, excited, and often want to rush through washing their hands just to get back to playing. That’s why I was so excited to try the GloWash Kids handwashing kit with the children at Little Duck Family Child Care.
I can honestly say this was one of the most engaging hygiene activities we have ever done together.
The GloWash kit comes with glow-in-the-dark lotion, a UV flashlight, a sand timer, and a children’s book called The Germinator. The idea is simple but incredibly effective: children apply the special lotion to their hands, shine the UV light on them to “see the germs,” and then practice washing properly until the glowing spots disappear.
The kids were immediately fascinated.
Seeing the glowing “germs” on their hands turned an everyday routine into a hands-on science experiment. Some of the children were shocked to discover how much “germ glow” was left behind after a quick rinse. It became a great visual lesson showing why soap, scrubbing, and taking enough time really matter.

The included sand timer was also a huge help because it encouraged the children to slow down and wash for the recommended amount of time instead of rushing through. Before using GloWash, many of our daycare kids would barely spend a few seconds washing their hands. After using the kit, they started reminding each other to keep scrubbing until the timer ran out.
One of my favourite parts of the kit was The Germinator book. The story made the lesson fun, playful, and easy for younger children to understand. Reading the book together before the activity helped build excitement and gave the kids a better understanding of why clean hands are important for keeping ourselves and our friends healthy.
As a daycare provider, I also appreciated that the lotion is dermatologist tested, hypoallergenic, and made in Canada. With little ones constantly touching their faces, toys, and shared surfaces, having a safe and kid-friendly product is incredibly important.
What impressed me most was how effective this learning method was compared to simply telling children to wash their hands properly. Kids learn best through play, visual experiences, and interactive activities, and GloWash combines all of those perfectly.
After our GloWash activity day, the children were genuinely excited about handwashing. Several of them even asked to “check for germs” again later in the day. Turning hygiene into something fun instead of a chore made a huge difference.
I would absolutely recommend GloWash for daycares, preschools, classrooms, and families with young children. It transforms an important life skill into a memorable experience kids actually enjoy.
If you are looking for a creative way to teach children healthy habits while having fun together, GloWash is definitely worth checking out.
